5g Eliminates Borders: Musicians Synchronized Remotely Thanks to Orange, Ericsson and the Reina Sofía School of Music

  • The Orange 5G network and Ericsson’s 5G technology enable musicians from the Reina Sofía School of Music to perform in perfect synchrony from different locations in Madrid.
  • The event was attended by the President of the Community of Madrid and the Mayor of the capital.
  • 5G minimizes latency and enables real-time synchronization that was previously impossible, demonstrating the unlimited possibilities that this technology can bring to the entertainment and culture sector.

Technology and its unstoppable development in recent years has reached all sectors of society, causing unprecedented changes at all levels. From industry to education, including commerce and healthcare, the evolution of telecommunications has a positive impact on all of them. Thanks to a new collaboration between Orange and Ericsson, the entertainment and culture sector, especially music, is also experiencing a qualitative leap.

Musicians from the Reina Sofía School of Music have offered the first concert performed simultaneously from different locations emblematic of Madrid and supported by Orange’s commercial 5G network and Ericsson’s technology.

The demonstration was attended by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso; the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida; the CEO of Orange, JeanFrançois Fallacher; the CEO of Ericsson, Andrés Vicente and the General Director of the Reina Sofía School of Music, Julia Sánchez Abeal.

The experience has served to demonstrate that it is possible for musicians to perform in perfect harmony, regardless of the distance that separates them, thanks to the ultra-low latency and reliability offered by the network that Orange has deployed with Ericsson in Madrid. This milestone marks a turning point in the music industry, while demonstrating that 5G technology makes it possible to break down all kinds of barriers.

The concert took place between the Orange store in Puerta del Sol and the Plaza de Isabel II (Opera). The first performance, of works by Ástor Piazzolla, was given by a trio in which the pianist was in the tent in the Plaza de Isabel II and the violinist and accordionist in the store in Sol. Subsequently, a song recital was offered in which the pianist and mezzo-soprano were in the tent and the tenor in the store and performed the songs Amapola, Madrid and a Christmas carol.

All the musicians performed simultaneously thanks to the minimum delay/latency of the signal, offering viewers a real-time experience.

Orange’s commitment to the people of Madrid

This demonstration of the extraordinary possibilities offered by the new 5G mobile network, developed in the capital, illustrates Orange’s commitment to the Community of Madrid, where it has invested more than 4.6 billion euros. This investment translates into a large coverage of its fixed and mobile network to connect citizens with what really matters to them and boost Madrid businesses, favoring their economic recovery after the crisis caused by the pandemic.

The network investment accumulated by Orange in the Community of Madrid is more than close to 1.6 billion euros. Of these, 301 million dedicated to its 4G mobile networks (with which it reaches a coverage of almost 100%) and 5G (with a current coverage of 60% with the aim of reaching 63% by the end of the year); and 409 million dedicated to fiber, to reach more than 2.5 million homes and businesses in 84 municipalities.

In addition to its large investment to guarantee the connectivity of the people of Madrid, Orange has 101 points of sale in this city distributed in 31 municipalities of the Community. Its activity employs more than 9,000 people, between direct and indirect employment.
