Born in Aichi, Japan, in 2000. Since 2026, she has been studying at the Aline Foriel-Destezet Cello Chair of the Reina Sofía School of Music, with Professor Jens Peter Maintz. She holds an Albéniz Foundation scholarship.
She completed her higher education at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she trained with Andrés Díaz and Hans Jørgen Jensen. Subsequently, she earned a Master’s degree with honors at the Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University under the tutelage of Hans Jørgen Jensen.
Her awards include First Prize at the 14th Viva Hall International Music Competition, Second Prize at the 92nd Japan Music Competition, the Robert W. and G. Ann Corcoran Grand Prize at the Canadian Concerto Competition (2022), and First Prize in the Duo and Chamber Music categories of the GGS Competition (2023). She was also named a CHANEL Pygmalion Days Artist and selected as a Rebanks Fellow 2025/26 at the Glenn Gould School, becoming the first Japanese artist to receive this distinction.
She has performed with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa (with whom she gave the Japanese premiere of Fazıl Say’s Cello Concerto ‘Never Give Up’ in 2023), and the Gumma Symphony Orchestra, under conductors such as Joshua Weilerstein, Naoto Otomo, and Toshiaki Umeda. Also in 2023, she released her debut album, ‘Canon Shibata in Concert’, with Octavia Records.
She plays a Giovanni Grancino cello (c. 1694) from the Munetsugu Collection.
