Building

The main headquarters of the Reina Sofía School of Music is located in the Plaza de Oriente, a privileged enclave in the historic center of Madrid, next to the Royal Palace and the Teatro Real.

The building, designed by the architect Miguel de Oriol e Ybarra and inaugurated in 2008 by H.M. Queen Sofía, was built on a site ceded by the Madrid City Council, and consists of 5000 m2 that house classrooms, rehearsal rooms, a library, a sound library, an archive, areas for teachers and students, offices, as well as spaces for meetings and a concert hall: the Sony Auditorium, with capacity for 351 people.

The building is designed to house a center for advanced musical training, with criteria of comfort, accessibility and modernity. The space destined for academic activity has more than 25 booths and 20 study rooms, equipped with all the necessary material and technological resources, where classes and rehearsals of the different chairs take place. In addition, from Monday to Sunday and from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., students can reserve study spaces to carry out their individual and group practices and rehearsals. All space management and class scheduling is digitized through the Asimut application, used by the main music schools in the world.

The School’s headquarters is harmoniously integrated into the surroundings of the Plaza de Oriente, whose remodeling was also carried out by Miguel de Oriol e Ybarra, and stands out for the use of large glass panels on its facade that allow natural light to be used inside and offer magnificent views of the Plaza.
