After the student’s performance, Professor Klein discusses general considerations to keep in mind when playing for an audition: doing something new, never giving the impression of physical or mental fatigue, the most appropriate version to perform in an audition, thinking about what is most suitable based on the conductor’s style, the principal oboe, and the rest of the orchestra’s wind section, etc. The professor compares it to a political campaign in which one must attract the greatest number of votes possible.
Regarding the interpretation of this particular movement, the professor makes comments related to phrasing, dynamics and contrasts, and coordination with the piano on entrances. It is also important to try to play from memory.
He points out dynamic and color changes based on the harmonies, and especially based on the surprising and playful character that Mozart demonstrates throughout the work with his way of composing it, constantly defying the compositional rules of the time. One must play with this in mind, to better show these character changes and ensure that the energy does not diminish, but without being aggressive when playing loudly.
