MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus
Concerto for oboe and orchestra in C major K 314 (reduction for oboe and piano)
II. Andante ma non troppo
Alex Klein, Professor
Bethany Akers, Student
Vadim Gladkov, accompanying pianist
Professor Klein begins by commenting that in this concerto the first and third movements are essentially jokes, whereas this second movement is a beautiful opera aria. The challenge is to perform both well, especially for an audition. Later, Alex Klein provides some phrasing indications and recommends that the student transform that energy into sweetness: it should not sound too exciting and vibrant. He points out the contrasts in the score based on the harmonies and finally suggests at a certain point not to use too much rubato because it somewhat destroys the calm of the moment with the orchestra. He insists on creating a sweeter color while maintaining the dynamics without timidity.
