BACH, Johann Sebastian
Keyboard Partita No. 2 in C minor BWV 826
I. Sinfonia
András Schiff, Guest Professor
Daumants Liepins, student
After the performance, Maestro Schiff makes corrections regarding the theme’s rhythm and phrasing. For the following section, he points out that the sound should be like that of an oboe d’amore —referencing the St Matthew Passion— and for this, it should be played more legato. Schiff also comments on the function of the eighth notes, and they review the agogics and articulation of that part, each playing a voice to demonstrate. He then suggests not using the una corda pedal in Bach, as the piano sound can be achieved with the hands, not the feet. He continues with more instructions on sustaining the sound in certain notes and reviews the accentuation of a phrase and the tempo and rhythm for the fast fugal section. Here, András Schiff proposes an alternative fingering, justified by a comment from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and indicates that although the fugato is only two voices, it should create the illusion of a full orchestra, and for this, a greater variety of colors should be employed. At the end, he highlights the reincorporation of the Neapolitan 6th and the hemiola rhythm.
