BARTÓK, Béla
44 Duos for Two Violins Sz 98 BB 104 (version for two violas)
28. Bánkódás (Sorrow)
Antoine Tamestit, guest professor
Guillermo Gil García, student
Xiaoti Guo, student
The professor discusses Bartók’s fieldwork, the recordings he made of folklore, and the emotional importance of simple melodies. The performance must show these emotions, all the nuances: dissonances, clash of voices, accents… feel every sound.
Tamestit also talks about the regularity of classical music structures and the mental rethinking that must be done when playing folk music. They work on the irregularity of the rhythm, which has to be highlighted with the rest of the expressive elements. The second viola has to feel what the first is going to do, anticipate and adapt. They work on vibrato, tuning and sound intensity, coordination of the bow strokes, the sound balance between the two violas, etc.
