Antoine Tamestit: Bartók – 44 Duos Sz 98 (viola version) – 32. Dance from Máramaros

Course
2016-17

BARTÓK, Béla

44 Duos for Two Violins Sz 98 BB 104 (version for two violas)

32. Máramarosi Tánc (Dance from Máramaros)

Antoine Tamestit, guest professor

Miho Kawai, student

Xiaoti Guo, student

In this master class, the professor corrects the bowings at the end. The tempo is perhaps a little slow, and he also mentions that this piece is very energetic and closely related to dance; it is very extroverted. There is a duality of voices between folk music and “educated” music.
Afterwards, they work on the ritenuto. Tamestit also advises the students that they must listen continuously to know what is coming. They change some fingering at the end and modify the tuning of a note (making it a little sharper through the vibrato). In the pizzicato of the second voice, it is advisable to make the voice more lively; it is Bartók’s voice, and to mark the chromaticism of the double strings. Other recommendations made by the professor relate to the rhythm, which has to be very precise, and to the understanding (you always have to play with the other person, listening to them).
Finally, they talk about the accents of the first voice.
