For Professor Tamestit, it is important to try to imagine the story that the piece describes, to try to describe the musical elements with words. Imagination is essential to play this type of work; one must dedicate more time to developing and nurturing the ideas, the images that we create in our minds. This helps us to bring out different sounds and phrasings, intonation… and generally improve all aspects of the piece.
They work emotionally on the phrases; one has to undress emotionally when playing: art allows us to talk about feelings, where emotions emerge without rules or limits. He talks about the original bowings of the score, which almost nobody plays, and compares them with the usual bowings. When we study, we have to be our worst critic, but when we play in public, we must be our best friend. We have to make the sound that we have in mind emerge, and if we are too introverted, it is more difficult. He recommends that the student attend singing classes to work on her shyness.
