LIGETI, György
Sonata for Solo Viola
I. Hora lunga
Antoine Tamestit, guest professor
Luosha Fang, student
The movement is mainly inspired by Romanian folklore. They discuss Ligeti’s musical influences and the improvisational capacity of folk music. The musical elements that Ligeti writes determine the character of the movement.
Professor Tamestit also talks about the use of vibrato in the first phrases, which has to be very lyrical. He adds that rubato should not be confused with a change of tempo.
They work on ways to find the tuning through harmonics. In addition, the professor points out that it is good to practice all possible fingerings in a passage, because it also helps with tuning. Tuning is the primary objective of this movement. Advice to the student: keep nails shorter to be able to press the string properly. Finally, reference is made to attention to dynamics: only play pianissimo when the score indicates it.
