Calogero Palermo: Bassi – Concert Fantasia on Motives from Verdi’s Rigoletto

Course
2023-24

BASSI, Luigi

Concert Fantasy on themes from “Rigoletto” by G. Verdi for clarinet and piano

Calogero Palermo, guest professor

Teresa Pellicer Herrero, student

Samuel Tirado Villaescusa, accompanist pianist

In this masterclass, the professor suggests taking more time in the section written by Bassi, especially the cadenza, and when the piano carries the main melody, it should be played pianissimo. They review issues related to character, phrasing, agogics, accents, and notes to bring out depending on the harmony, dynamics…
Later on, one should not speed up when the piano plays the triplets. In the Andante section, the repeat should not be played the same way because the harmony is different. Professor Palermo also corrects an incorrect note in the edition. He continues with phrasing and articulation indications for certain passages. Overall, Palermo asks the student for more colour and expressiveness, especially in Verdi’s original themes. After the cadenza, he suggests playing more agitato and virtuoso, and it should be more articulated but without accents and not pesante.
Returning to the beginning, they go over the most difficult sections again: the professor gives indications regarding where to breathe so that the music makes more sense, mainly in terms of phrasing and character.
