DEBUSSY, Claude
First rhapsody for clarinet and piano
Calogero Palermo, guest professor
Pablo Díaz Díaz, student
Samuel Tirado Villaescusa, collaborative pianist
After the student’s performance, the professor provides brief corrections regarding the duration of a certain note (it should be shorter) and the dynamics at a certain point. They then review in detail the rhythm, dynamics, and intonation of a passage. Palermo then makes suggestions so that the dynamics are well balanced among the different parts.
He continues with corrections relating to tempo, phrasing, rhythmic figures, articulation, and accents.
Calogero Palermo also provides indications, taking into account the harmonies of the piano and clarinet, to achieve a more balanced sound appropriate to the character and dynamics of each part.
The student plays the entire Rhapsody again at the professor’s request, who listens from the audience. Afterward, he makes comments regarding the rapport and sound balance between the instruments: he should play more forte, with more air but projecting from the diaphragm and not from the lips.
