SCHUMANN, Robert

Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) for cello and piano op. 73

I. Zart und mit Ausdruck

Emil Rovner, visiting professor

María Igual Devesa, student

Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist

The professor congratulates the student because her interpretation has been personal and that is very positive. Resuming from the beginning, Rovner suggests she take more care with string changes so that the sound is more integrated. Regarding a certain color and character that is somewhat too relaxed that the student employs, the professor believes it should be modified slightly, and not to use too many cello resources such as vibrato and others, as it would deviate somewhat from the original idea of the composition, which is for clarinet. Perhaps it can also be somewhat more animated. In a certain leap he recommends not doing so much glissando, and further on Rovner proposes marking the forte-piano more clearly. He also gives indications regarding coordination with the piano, articulation, and sound quality.
In another leap, to avoid the glissando the professor proposes a more comfortable fingering. Before concluding, Rovner gives some further suggestions on phrasing and musical direction, and on avoiding dwelling too much on all the deceptive cadences because otherwise the line is lost.
Finally, he speaks of an earlier version of these pieces that has some differences from the Fantasiestücke, which Schumann called “Soirée Stücke.” They are in an English edition that is interesting to know.
