SCHUMANN, Robert
Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) for cello and piano op. 73
II. Lebhaft, leicht
Emil Rovner, visiting professor
María Igual Devesa, student
Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist
After the student’s performance, the professor asks her about the character of this piece compared to the previous one. It is fresher, but the rubato should not be too exaggerated and the end of the first phrase should be without glissando. For this, Rovner proposes a different fingering. At a certain point, it is important to emphasize the sforzando.
They also discuss here some differences between this version and the “Soirée Stücke” that Schumann composed first.
The second time the same theme is repeated, the professor suggests playing it more naturally without taking so much time, and emphasizes avoiding overly exaggerated glissandi.
For the next repetition, he also proposes playing it differently, in this case more dramatically and articulated (more spoken and less lyrical). Emil Rovner insists on not repeating the same rubato twice.
For the ending, he suggests making it gradually calmer, delaying slightly more at the conclusion.
