SCHUMANN, Robert
Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) for cello and piano op. 73
III. Rasch und mit Feuer
Emil Rovner, visiting professor
María Igual Devesa, student
Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist
Rovner congratulates the student on her personal interpretation and generally notes that he missed more contrast, especially in the 3rd piece. Returning to this, Rovner provides instructions for the beginning regarding articulation to achieve a typical, more “angry” Schumann character. He later suggests playing more rhythmically and squarely to be more in sync with the piano.
It is important that the tempo does not drop; everything should be “Fast and with fire,” as indicated by the composer. If more time is taken at a certain point, it is advisable to recover it later.
For a specific section, the professor asks for a different, fuller tone to create a chorale-like effect with the piano: it is chamber music, and they must form a well-integrated duo. Here, he also suggests making fewer abrupt movements because it requires a more intimate character, like a dialogue.
For Rovner, the end of a phrase is less meaningful without as much vibrato. He then indicates that she should be more within the pulse of the piano’s eighth notes. At another point, nearing the end, the professor also suggests taking more time.
In conclusion, he recommends having more structure because, although Schumann is romantic and these pieces are fantasies, she should not sacrifice the precise structure and rhythm.
