BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van
Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 “Pastoral” (horn part)
I. Allegro ma non troppo
III. Allegro
V. Allegretto
Eric Reed, guest professor
Paula Cerdán Brau, student
For the first passage, the professor reviews the tuning of certain intervals and the articulation, which is too short and aggressive (using the tongue too much to cut the notes) for the rustic and pastoral character of the symphony.
In the following passage from the third movement, the student did not play the first notes, and Reed recommends once again—as with the other passages—that for auditions she should prepare her own book extracted from the original orchestral parts, as editions contain many errors. For the beginning, he also suggests not playing so “vertically” so that it sounds more lyrical. He then makes a metrical suggestion: to think of it in 12/4 (in 4 parts) instead of 3/4. This way, the phrasing fits and it may be easier for her to mark the important points.
For the final passage, corresponding to the V. Allegretto movement, he suggests playing it somewhat faster.
