NEULING, Hermann

Bagatelle for horn and piano

Eric Reed, guest professor

Álvaro Padín Rosal, student

Luis Arias Fernández, piano accompanist

After the student plays the Bagatelle, Reed asks him how he felt while playing, as he has a physical issue that prevents him from playing normally. The professor did not notice it and thought it was a very good performance. He then asks him why he likes playing this piece, and they discuss its style and character. It is important to be mindful of technique, but also to convey that enjoyment when playing the piece.
Something they can work on is that expressiveness in communion with the piano, telling an imagined story based on the character of the music. They review the sound, phrasing, and rhythm at certain points. Also, body position, which helps to be more relaxed, and breathing, practicing the best way to breathe, especially in the most complicated parts. Reed then mentions the difference in the use of the tongue and the way of breathing in the legato passages, where the air must be kept constant, compared to the staccato notes the student played. It is better to think of staccato as light notes rather than short ones; this will help him in the way he plays them. Also, so that the sound does not seem so laborious and strained, the professor advises playing with more freedom and relaxation in both the shoulders and the lower body, as if the force were coming from the abdomen and projected forward. Finally, Reed points out the importance of avoiding breaks in the sound caused by holding the breath, ensuring instead that the air flows constantly.
