SCHUBERT, Franz

Trio for piano, violin and cello in B flat major D 898 op. 99

IV. Rondo. Allegro vivace – Presto

Ferenc Rados, guest professor

Monte Trio
Francesco Sica, violin
Claude Frochaux, cello
Anca Lupu, piano

For this 4th movement of Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 1, Professor Ferenc Rados proposes questions regarding the character (one must not be serious; this music is full of “gags”) and also the phrasing, which he explains by playing the piano or singing. The professor advises against playing everything in the same vein. One must play with delicacy, although it is a very complex melody with different changes in the bass. In addition, the character of the passages in forte should not be lazy; it requires more active playing, without delay.
After some reflections on the tempo, rhythmic precision, and the mobility or “choreography of the notes,” they work on the articulation of the violin: coordination, precision, bow speed. They also work on the preparations, and the professor makes continuous examples of phrasing.
