I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues)

“Lieto del dolce incarco” – “La tremenda ultrice spada”

Francisco Araiza, guest professor

Olga Syniakova, student

Laurence Verna, accompanying pianist

The professor advises at the beginning that there is a moment in the aria in which one sings in the perfect position: one must take advantage of the podium position that one has when performing. One must not let the voice drop, but always keep it up. Furthermore, he comments that one must handle the lips with care, and that the vowels “e”, “i” are enemies of singing because they restrict the phonal capacity, so we have to try to transfer the resonance of these vowels to other membranes. The professor insists on the way to place the sound.

The cabaletta needs a total energetic hook. The entries can be taken in anacrusis. Do not sing so legato, something more aggressive. Continuously one must place the voice back and give double the volume to the notes indicated in the cadence. Each composition has a framework that delimits the framework where it moves and one must be careful not to break it. Professor Araiza also recommends not taking risks in culminating notes because one can lose all the effect of heroism that has been accumulated in the passage; it is not necessary to make that note.
