DONIZETTI, Gaetano
Lucia di Lammermoor
“Regnava nel silenzio”
Francisco Araiza, guest professor
Maylin Anabel Cruz Fonseca, student
Laurence Verna, accompanying pianist
For Professor Araiza, the tempo is lighter, as it has to do with the personality of Lucia, who is bipolar, schizophrenic. An extreme incident that occurs in a life can change personalities, so every time we start singing we have to move to that restless and active emotional moment, and little by little we calm down during the 3 stanzas.
Afterwards, the professor points out that in descending melodies, the high vocal placement should not be lost. One must be very respectful of the score and not invent notes. In the second stanza there is a change of attitude towards more tranquility. Everything has to be very connected, each phrase. In addition, the attacks have to be much more incisive. Other indications from Francisco Araiza refer to imitating the piano entrances more and collecting the word endings more. Singing is something very physical, so you have to use the body while singing.
In conclusion, Araiza remarks that it is necessary to activate the posterior third, turn the head when necessary and move when it helps the singing.
