ROSSINI, Gioachino
Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)
“Largo al factotum”
Francisco Araiza, guest professor
Gabriel Alonso Díaz, student
Laurence Verna, accompanying pianist
In this masterclass, Professor Araiza discusses with the student his need to improve the dramaturgical concept of the aria, and talks to him about it. There are arias that are easy to perform because they have a very clear design. He then recounts an anecdote about Hermann Prey, a famous baritone.
This aria has a framework of two elements: the light and the dense, and they have to be combined well. For the same phrase (“Son qua”) you have to find a presentation gesture, and always the same one. The professor also points out that the audience must be made complicit in our entire story. In addition, he recommends launching and not being afraid of the fast part.
In the final cadence, the mouth must be opened wide. The whole aria is summarised in these two well-combined and assembled elements.
