HINDEMITH, Paul
Concerto for horn and orchestra (reduction for horn and piano)
I. Moderately fast
Froydis Ree Wekre, guest professor
Alfredo Varela, student
Jan Krzysztof Broja, accompanying pianist
After the performance, Professor Ree Wekre asks the student about general information about the composer and the work, and comments that she knows a conductor and clarinetist who in turn met Hindemith and tells a personal anecdote: he considered that the musicians would know how to interpret all the details of his music even if they were not written in the score. Then the professor describes this work, imagining in the first movement a proud and somewhat arrogant man. In the 2nd movement he is in a big city, a little cheeky. And in the third movement, the longest, there is a great commotion due to some catastrophe that has happened to him, leaving him alone without receiving help. All this should be reflected in the character of the interpretation, so, returning from the beginning, she suggests playing not so “scherzando” but with more arrogance. The character has improved, but intonation must not be neglected.
Next, the professor shows him some phrasing and possibilities so that he can create a more solid architecture, as well as a more defined rhythm without wasting energy.
Finally, they also review a certain passage to achieve a good sound by improving the position of the lips in the horn’s embouchure.
