Gérard Caussé: Brahms – Viola Sonata Op. 120/1 – III. Allegretto grazioso

Course
2024-25

BRAHMS, Johannes

Sonata for Viola and Piano in F minor, Op. 120 No. 1

III. Allegretto grazioso

Gérard Caussé, guest professor

Martina Bonaldo, student

Antonia Valente, accompanist

During a section of the performance of the third movement of Brahms’ Viola Sonata No. 1, Caussé stops the student to instruct her that, due to the syncopated rhythm between her and the piano, she must play it very clearly and strictly to ensure perfect coordination. He also asks her to use more bow and more contact with the string, as it is Brahms. Furthermore, as it is like a waltz, she must interpret it with the appropriate meter.
It is important to adapt to the acoustics of the concert hall; it is not a small classroom, so, in addition to closing the piano lid, the violist needs to articulate more for the sound produced to be adequate. Afterwards, Caussé makes comments regarding phrasing and bow distribution for a certain passage. They review the fingering at certain points to achieve the most suitable sound and intonation, as well as coordination with the piano, among other musical aspects.
