Gérard Caussé: Enescu – Concert Piece for Viola and Piano

Course
2024-25

ENESCU, George

Concert Piece for viola and piano

Gérard Caussé, visiting professor

Adriana Julio Sáiz, student

Antonia Valente, accompanist pianist

After the student’s complete performance of the Piece, the professor congratulates her and comments on certain fingerings. As he has the original manuscript at the School, he recommends that she consult it on these matters. They begin to go through the work together from the beginning, reviewing issues such as maintaining the colour in the first phrase (for this, playing all the notes with vibrato and not only the first ones), details relating to rhythm, bowings and bow distribution, dynamics, vibrato, bow direction according to phrasing, articulations, etc.
For a certain passage, Caussé recommends that she play without moving the wrist or elbow, keeping the joints fixed and creating a kind of atmosphere with a rough, harsh touch so typical of composers of the period, almost oriental. In the following fast section of ascending notes, he asks her to make the articulation shorter so that it gives more of a sense of taking off quickly. In addition, the attack should be more direct, coming in faster and letting the hand do the work, not the head.
