HINDEMITH, Paul
Sonata for Solo Viola, Op. 25 No. 1
I. Breit
Hariolf Schlichtig, guest professor
Álvaro García Ros, student
The student must “speak” this work with great clarity, and to do so, he has to articulate more from the bow. The professor shows him the groups of notes in the phrasing to clarify them for the student. In this piece, the dynamics move at the same time as the tempo.
Corrections are also given on the portato, sound control in string changes, the meaning of “ruhig” (tranquil), and technical work on double strings. The string change has to be anticipated by the fingers, and each interval has its own character and expression. This expression is what places us in the movement and not the metronome. The professor explains the rhythmic relationship between 6 and 4 (sixteenth notes) and also wants the student to further clarify the changes from major to minor and, in general, to have a deeper connection within the phrase between the climax and another tessitura or change of character.
Finally, some comments are made about Hindemith’s music and his value as a composer.
