BRAHMS, Johannes
Sonata for viola and piano in E-flat major, op. 120 no. 2
III. Andante con moto
Hartmut Höll, guest professor
Ewelina Bielarczyk, viola
Madarys Morgan Verdecia, piano
Professor Höll focuses his explanations on musical aspects such as dynamics and sound balance, phrasing, and articulation. Regarding the balance of sound and the relationship between both instruments, the professor points out that the viola should be softer and start all diminuendi earlier. In contrast, the piano should open the sound and make it seem simpler, as if singing. Höll comments that what we feel is very important, in addition to technique, at every moment.
In the piano part, the articulation needs more support and then relaxation, as natural as possible. In the longer phrases, the left hand has to be heard.
Professor Höll mentions other aspects relating to the viola part: legato espressivo, relaxation and “calando”.
Finally, the piano should use the space as if floating, being suspended and connecting all the parts.
