SIBELIUS, Jean
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor, Op. 47
III. Finale. Allegro ma non tanto
Jaime Martín, guest conductor
Inés Issel Burzyñska, violin
Freixenet Symphony Orchestra of the Reina Sofía School of Music
The beginning in low strings is played with the original instrumentation (2 Vlas, 2 Vcs, 1 Cb), and the articulation must be very clear. Martín tells the orchestra that they must pay close attention to the tempo and the soloist’s passages. At times, the strings need to play towards the tip of the bow and sautillé (bouncing). Clarinets and bassoons must perform the same dynamics in the off-beat passages. The long notes in the brass section should maintain sound and clarity. Maestro Martín also comments that in many passages, the articulation of the orchestra must resemble that of the soloist.
