BOTTESINI, Giovanni
Introduction and gavotte for double bass and piano
Janne Saksala, guest professor
Jimena Rodríguez San Miguel, student
Jesús Gómez Madrigal, accompanying pianist
On many occasions, Professor Saksala plays to practically demonstrate what he wants the student to correct.
In general, the phrasing and musical issues related to it are worked on in depth: important notes, breathing, vibrato in certain passages, etc.
On the other hand, there is a main idea that is repeated throughout the video: the need to take more time on certain notes, especially to give more fantasy or improve expressiveness.
The student has to project the sound outwards using more bow, and has to “enter the string more” since greater contact is required to obtain a richer sound.
The professor comments on the need to work on the spiccato: it must be prepared starting in the air, with sufficient height, as if strumming the string.
A certain passage practically has the character of a mazurka and another is more cantabile, so a contrast should be noted. For the end, a large accelerando is required.
