Javier Camarena: Puccini – Tosca – “Recondita Armonia”

Course
2019-20

PUCCINI, Giacomo

Tosca

“Recondita armonia”

Javier Camarena, guest professor

Jorge Luis Puerta Aray, student

Duncan Gifford, accompanying pianist

For this masterclass, the first thing Camarena comments on is that this aria is very well known and has many versions. In addition, care must be taken with the rhythmic sense to make it more precise and give the sensation of 6/8.

It is important to take advantage of all the nuances that Puccini writes, dynamics, articulation, tempo, etc. to give it more expressiveness and change the atmosphere and character depending on what is being expressed. The professor also suggests better preparing the high note in the ear and placement of the voice to improve intonation. Afterwards, there is some correction regarding the pronunciation of the text and its phrasing. Describe what is being said, that there is more contrast in a certain part. The final note should be shorter and without diminuendo.

Finally, Javier Camarena advises the student to study the score more to have a clearer understanding of its interpretative and musical expression intention.
