Jonathan Brown congratulates the student and they discuss issues relating to the viola version and the score edition that takes into account Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript.
They also discuss the manuscript by Johann Peter Kellner, a pupil of Bach, and the professor indicates which edition he prefers and recommends a way of interpreting this work using three copies of the score, with the last one being the student’s own “edition” based on the study of the previous ones.
Brown also talks about Bach’s compositional approach and the Baroque in general, where ornaments are improvised and, for that, the harmonic foundation has to be very clear, because the choices for the “improvisation” depend on it. To work on this, the professor asks the student to play the harmonic bass line at the beginning—only the chord progressions—and from this they develop the entire study of the class on the Allemande from Bach’s Suite No. 6.
