After the performance of the movement, the professor and student discuss bow distribution: the student must decide how much bow to use, taking each phrase into account. They also discuss the German markings in the score.
Brown asks her to start again from the beginning but playing pizzicato without the bow. They review the phrases as she plays, attempting to convey the appropriate expressiveness for each moment in pizzicato. This is so the student can see more clearly what message she wants to convey and then begin to seek it with the bow. The difficulty of playing legato across two bow strokes at a certain point is, for the professor, something the work demands—that sense of suffering.
They continue working on specific sections, considering the required character and how to express it with the bow, such as authority.
