Lawrence Power: Enescu – Concert Piece for Viola and Piano

Course
2023-24

ENESCU, George

Concert Piece for viola and piano

Lawrence Power, Guest Professor

Mario Carpintero Martín, student

Antonia Valente, accompanying pianist

After the student’s performance, the professor makes some general comments on the character and articulation and phrasing needed to achieve the “drama” this music requires.
They then begin to review the work from the beginning in greater detail, for which Lawrence Power makes recommendations primarily regarding bow and finger movement to achieve proper articulation, vibrato, the expressiveness of each moment, contact and pressure on the strings, etc.
Power suggests ways to practice certain passages technically, and advises him to do so at home in front of a mirror. He also suggests specific exercises and studies focused on improving the performance of some parts of the piece, for example to improve bow strokes such as “martelé.” For the ending, he must pay attention to the accents and play with great energy. The professor demonstrates by playing and suggests how to use the bow with small hand movements.
