MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus
Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) K 384
“Ich baue ganz auf deine Stärke”
Leigh Melrose, guest professor
César Augusto Arrieta Salazar, student
Madalit Lamazares, accompanying pianist
First, Professor Melrose suggests to the student that, in order to sing this aria, they should think of someone they love very much and try to sing for that person: the idea is to find the most suitable emotional state to correctly interpret the aria. They also work on phrasing and breathing in various passages. In one of them, after a great intake of air, the student should retain that air while delaying the moment to continue singing. Also in this passage, the connection and understanding with the piano is especially relevant.
The student must pay attention to the text and articulation, depending on the character and emotion being described at that moment: they should never forget the appropriate expression for each passage.
Leigh Melrose also explains that when a high note is repeated, the support must be maintained continuously, instead of raising it and dropping it each time. At certain times, intonation is also worked on, and to finish, Professor Melrose recommends maintaining the attitude until the end of the aria to create a powerful conclusion.
