Leigh Melrose: Verdi – Simon Boccanegra – “Il Lacerato Spirito”

Course
2017-18

VERDI, Giuseppe

Simon Boccanegra

“Il lacerato spirito”

Leigh Melrose, guest professor

Walter Sebastián Bartaburu, student

Madalit Lamazares, accompanying pianist

To begin, Melrose points out that the first phrase must be sustained. The professor and student discuss expressiveness and the best way to express the emotional moment of the character in this aria. Afterwards, they work on the phrasing based on the text and the pronunciation of a specific word. Regarding the student’s attitude, the professor generally advises him to “open up” more.
At the end, the student asks the professor a technical question regarding how to improve tongue control, and the professor suggests trying to relax the mouth as much as possible. It may be helpful to practice this in front of the mirror, but without obsessing over it or feeling self-conscious about it.
