Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in D major, Op. 19 (reduction for violin and piano)
I. Andantino
Lorin Maazel, guest professor
Abel Alejandro Rodríguez García, student
Alina Artemyeva, accompanying pianist
Introduction: sound and types of violins. Then Professor Maazel talks about the sound quality at the beginning: the vibrato has to be more expressive and comes from the arm. Afterwards, tempo indications and corrections are made regarding bow distribution and weight: more quantity, more air. Regarding tuning: it is necessary to listen to the orchestra part as a reference.
Lorin Maazel also comments on some issues regarding pizzicato: finger vibration to achieve high sound quality. Regarding the mute: in high registers, the mute must be placed on the opposite side of the bridge to achieve a good sound. On the D string, move it to the opposite side.
