STRAUSS, Richard
Sonata for violin and piano in E-flat major TrV 151 op. 18
I. Allegro ma non troppo
Lorin Maazel, guest professor
Mohamed Hiber, student
Alina Artemyeva, accompanying pianist
The master class begins with an indication from Maazel regarding the duration of a certain note: do not play it quickly so as not to lose the sensation of pause. The professor also makes comments on finger placement: a flatter position on the string, especially in fast passages, to obtain better sound quality. More metric rigor in a passage to achieve a more noble character. Indications are also given on phrasing, tuning, and perfect pitch.
Lorin Maazel advises the student to use the arm more to achieve a better vibrato.
