PASCULLI, Antonino
Fantasy on themes from Donizetti’s opera “Poliuto” for oboe and piano
Lucas Macías, professor
Lucía Talavera Haya, student
Alina Artemyeva, accompanying pianist
Professor Macías congratulates the student after her performance of the Fantasy on Poliuto, and comments that if the tempo is too fast in the coda for her, she can slow it down. They resume from the “Moderato” and work on the phrasing and the cantabile character there. If she plays it a little slower and clearer, it sounds more virtuoso. They also review the breathing.
For the next theme, he recommends playing a little faster, making the sixteenth note a little later so that it sounds more humorous.
In the variations, he also makes indications of phrasing and dynamics. For a certain fast trill, he suggests leaving the finger on the key, not lifting it much, to achieve greater execution speed.
The important thing is that the student thinks about how she would sing it, and tries to extrapolate that to the instrument. It is not necessary for each note to sound very clear, but rather the important ones of the theme. He also points out some nuances so that the piano and oboe are in tune with each other.
Finally, they review some details of the beginning of the piece again to achieve the character and expressiveness required in that part.
