TURINA, Joaquín
Trio for piano, violin and cello in B minor op. 76
I. Lento – Allegro molto moderato
Márta Gulyás, professor
Amati Trio
Paula Mejía España, violin
Eva Arderíus Esteban, cello
Matteo Giuliani, piano
At the beginning of the class, Gulyás checks the acoustics with the beginning of the Allegro and asks to raise the lid of the piano so that it sounds more. Afterwards, the trio performs the complete first movement, and Professor Gulyás comments that at certain moments it has seemed somewhat heavy; they need to think more about the phrasing to prevent this from happening and to avoid giving the sensation of such long phrases. They briefly analyze the theme and harmonies of the beginning to make the expression and direction of the music more appropriate based on this. They should also think about the metric freedom they want to exercise based on their personality. The violin should not rush in the theme, and they should play with more contact with the strings. Gulyás continues with indications of tempo, phrasing, color and vibrato, dynamics… always considering the harmonies that are being produced. At a certain moment, the character should be more magical, and she also corrects the articulation on the piano. In addition, they have to play thinking about the acoustics and the audience. She reviews a certain passage of violin and cello and makes reference to Beethoven.
For Gulyás, they should show more Spanish temperament. She works in detail with the piano and continues with indications of character and phrasing mainly. She also stops at the cello solo to make some indications. In the solos they can stop and have more freedom, but then they must go together.
Afterwards, the professor continues giving indications regarding the tempo, direction of the music and expressiveness, especially to the piano. In the end, they manage to play with more force and tension.
