DEBUSSY, Claude
En blanc et noir (In White and Black) for two pianos
II. Lent. Sombre
Menahem Pressler, guest professor
Dúo del Valle of the Málaga Foundation
Luis del Valle del Valle, piano
Víctor del Valle del Valle, piano
After playing the complete movement, the professor congratulates them and they begin working from the beginning.
In the chords at a certain point at the beginning, the accent should not be so strong. Pressler likens the sound to a violin’s vibrato glissando. Then that trumpet-like sound should be more muted. He also corrects the articulation in certain repeated notes of Piano II.
In general, the professor makes comments mainly related to the sound, the tempo liberties, the dynamics and sound balance, and the attention to the harmonies. At a certain point, he corrects the rhythm, likening it more to the beating of the heart. He also comments on matters of character and insists on playing more quietly in certain moments, so that it is not noisy, as if only one piano were playing and without too much pedal.
