Mikhail Voskresensky: Mendelssohn – Piano Concerto No. 2 Op 40 – II. Adagio

Course
2011-12

MENDELSSOHN, Felix

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in D minor, Op. 40 (orchestral part reduced for piano)

II. Adagio – Molto sostenuto

Mikhail Voskresensky, guest professor

Katharina Treutler, student

Denis Lossev, accompanying pianist

In general, the 2nd movement has been very well performed, but it is a lament, and it needs to be sung as if the right hand were a great singer, like Maria Callas. In addition, one must not be afraid in some passages and must give the melody more freedom and rubato; it has a more improvisational character.
Professor Voskresensky then makes specific indications regarding dynamics, contrasts and sound, character, different instruments of the orchestra, or agogics, among others.
