MENDELSSOHN, Felix
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in D minor, Op. 40 (orchestral part reduced for piano)
III. Finale. Presto scherzando
Mikhail Voskresensky, guest professor
Katharina Treutler, student
Denis Lossev, accompanying pianist
In this masterclass, the first thing Voskresensky points out is that the Finale should be very lively and fast; one should not be so lyrical in the part with the black notes. According to the professor, the fact that the student has made so many changes between playing rubato and a tempo has stopped and slightly lost the “best champagne” character that this movement should have. The idea is to play it lighter but without losing the waltz character in 3, marking the first beat more clearly.
Later on, Voskresensky insists on the leggiero character, the rhythm, and at the same time playing forte, which is complicated, and that the student should not make stops: she must fly like a bird.
