PROKOFIEV, Sergey
Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63 (violin and piano reduction)
I. Allegro moderato
Miriam Fried, guest professor
Lisa-Maria Sekine, student
Vadim Gladkov, accompanying pianist
After the student’s performance of the Allegro moderato, Fried begins by making general comments on the bow arm movement: certain movements she has made are not natural, and he advises her to make them more pendulum-like and rounded, delving deeper into the strings. Furthermore, one should not always play with the same sound, as this leads to a lack of inflections and contrasts, even if the thematic material is the same.
They begin to review from the start, seeking greater flexibility and free movement of the arm and shoulder, without tension and relaxing the muscles. This is also related to the sound, resonance, and vibration produced.
The professor also addresses the distribution and speed of the bow, as well as the bow’s position and attack on the strings. They then reflect on the character of the piece and the sound it requires, which must also be expressed through the bow’s movement.
Additionally, they review harmonies, main melodies, and moments of orchestral accompaniment for specific sections, the execution of the pizzicato to make it sound stronger, double stops, finger connection, dynamics, and sound balance with the orchestra.
