At the beginning of the class, Professor Fried discusses the general character of the piece and comments that the Nocturne is based on color. In the Tarantella, she focuses on the importance of accents to show the appropriate character: with energy and Spanish flair (like a “zapateado”).
It is advisable to pay attention to the clues given by the composer, but the performer is the one who creates the atmosphere; their task is to explain the meaning of the music, not only with the notes but also through body language.
She explains the phrasing, expressiveness, bow speed, dynamics, etc., and reflects on the purpose of each note: those whose function is decorative and others that have a more structural role. It is important to keep in mind and use all the musical aspects that make up the character of the music.
