The 21st Century Soloists series was created in 1992 and is one of the longest-running series in the programme of the Reina Sofía School of Music. Produced in collaboration with Radio Clásica of Spain’s National Radio, it brings highly talented young performers to the stage every Saturday morning in May—artists who will be leading figures in musical life in the years to come. All concerts in the series are also broadcast live on the radio as part of the Radio Clásica Concerts series, which broadens their reach and brings them to the thousands of listeners of this station, an essential pillar in promoting classical music in our country.
In this recital, Nicolás Margarit plays an original instrument from 1860, a fortepiano built by Broadwood & Sons for the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Lord Palmerston. It was later owned by the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan, who used it to compose his operettas.
At the end of the concert, as part of the School’s new Suite de Mediodía project, there will be a brief Encounter with the musician on the Auditorium stage, where he will answer questions and converse with the audience about this very special instrument, the program, and the works performed.
