SCHUMANN, Robert
Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano in A-flat major, op. 70
I. Adagio
Pablo Ferrández, Guest Professor
Friederike Herold, Student
Ofelia Montalván, accompanying pianist
Pablo Ferrández congratulates the student after her performance and points out that what was lacking is for her to play with less timidity and exaggerate the expression more. Starting from the beginning, they review the sound so that it is a bit warmer and with more color. It is important that she be fully aware of each note she plays and its relationship to the following ones, also taking care of the internal rhythm of the phrases.
At certain moments, the expression must change somewhat more because the character of the music changes, and this must be shown more clearly. Later on, for the professor it should be more “spoken” than “sung.”
The professor emphasizes that she must produce a more open and fuller sound in the Adagio, expressing more intensely and creating greater contrasts, especially when performing before an audience. She must also feel it physically. They review the legato and the vibrato for certain moments.
