SCHUMANN, Robert
Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano in A-flat major, op. 70
II. Allegro
Pablo Ferrández, guest professor
Friederike Herold, student
Ofelia Montalván, accompanying pianist
Pablo Ferrández congratulates the student after her performance and notes that she needs to play with less timidity and more exaggerated expression.
Starting again from the beginning, the professor indicates that bow usage should be improved to achieve a richer palette of nuances in the sound. To do this, she should use more areas of the bow when playing, thus avoiding empty spaces. He continues with instructions on bow distribution and quantity, playing as an exercise in a chosen area to discover the most suitable exact amount of bow to use.
Later, he also asks her to play as exaggeratedly as possible to break through that barrier of timidity and achieve an even bigger and more expressive sound that reaches the listener.
For a certain special moment, a different vibrato must be used. Finally, the professor recapitulates the most relevant advice given during the class so that she can apply it in her daily practice.
