SCHUMANN, Robert
Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61
I. Sostenuto assai – Allegro ma non troppo
Pablo Heras-Casado, guest conductor
Freixenet Symphony Orchestra of the Reina Sofía School of Music
Heras-Casado comments on several aspects of the Sostenuto assai introduction: the transition from tremolos to two-note chords with sforzato, the chords must resonate in the strings. Already in the Allegro, they work on the articulation of some passages of the strings, where it has to be more alla corda, and of the winds, which have to be much clearer. In strings, when we have a non-thematic note, we relax the articulation and make it spiccato. The articulation must always be very active. After the fortepiano, it is possible to continue phrasing, giving more volume to the phrase. In the Con fuoco, the black notes in woodwinds are marcato and very articulated. In general, the Maestro insists on aspects of articulation to give much more clarity to the interpretation.
