Pascal Moraguès: Debussy – Première Rhapsody for Clarinet and Piano

Course
2020-21

DEBUSSY, Claude

First rhapsody for clarinet and piano

Pascal Moraguès, professor

João Paiva, student

Patricia Araúzo Rodríguez, accompanying pianist

Professor Moraguès’ intervention begins with instructions to the student on adjusting his reed to better adapt to the acoustics of the hall and achieve greater projection, especially in forte dynamics.
Regarding the Rhapsody, he asks him to play the beginning, focusing on the sound and playing more with the piano. They discuss the tuning of certain intervals and the pressure to be applied. The management of the air column is very important to achieve the appropriate phrasing: maintain the pressure that always comes from the diaphragm, conserving the air until the end of the phrase. In high notes, we tend to secure each note, but we must think about the general phrasing and feel freer (more pressure and less tongue). He explains how to maintain the tuning, with key and fingers, of the open G, which must also be maintained even if there is a diminuendo. In open notes in staccato, always prepare the pressure.
The professor comments that if we pronounce certain notes better, we achieve greater sound stability; we must also be stable in the tempo. They work on the passage from the Animé, the trills and the thirty-second notes, subdividing them to fit perfectly into the pulse. To conclude, they correct the tuning of the last high notes.
