MENDELSSOHN, Felix
Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49
IV. Finale. Allegro assai appasionato
Ralf Gothóni, visiting professor
Mahou San Miguel Foundation Trio (21-22)
Marta Gallego Janovic, violin
Luis Aracama Alonso, cello
Kirill Zheleznov, piano
After playing the Finale of Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1, Gothóni questions certain phrasings that the group has made throughout the movement: pauses in the middle of phrases where they did not belong; the phrases should be longer and more complete. They can mark the pianissimo but without stopping the music. He also suggests that they play more with the pulse, that they can make it more free to imprint the required character on the tempo at each moment. Especially in the arpeggios of the piano, the pulse has to be noticeable and they have to flow according to what is harmonically more important.
Professor Gothóni also makes suggestions for phrasing and articulation, tempo and dynamics, and more suitable bowings and bow directions so that the interpretation has the required character at each moment.
Depending on the harmony, the professor also gives some final indications on the tempo changes in certain passages: accelerandi, no ritardando, maintain the sensation of the “Animato”, etc.
