CLARKE, Rebecca
Piano Trio
I. Moderato ma appassionato
Robert Levin, guest professor
Trio Ambage
Mila Haydon, violin
Célia Garetti Nicole, cello
Mariam Chitanava, piano
Professor Levin congratulates the trio after their performance of the complete movement, and generally indicates that the gestures and construction of the phrases could have been broader and with a greater sense of expansion, given the composer’s sound language.
At the beginning, it is important to take a deep breath to “launch” the piece and create that very special sound atmosphere it possesses. To improve their expressiveness, he makes some recommendations regarding articulation, rubati, and the piano arpeggios.
Resuming from the beginning, Levin gives them advice to improve their cohesion and to express the opening movement together, constructing the form of the piece more appropriately. They must think about maintaining the forward direction of the music. Later on, what is happening in the strings is somewhat lost, so he makes some indications to improve the sound balance. The professor continues with recommendations so that they play more cohesively and breathe together, on the use of the pedal in the piano, maintaining the musical direction, balance between the voices required by the composer’s very personal language (influenced by Debussy, he compares the language of French and German composers), phrasing, tempo and meter according to character, etc.
